Group History

History 6

The group is fortunate in having the original Logbook of the 1st Chipping Sodbury Scout Group, dating from 1914. This page contains extracts from that book.
The Troop was founded in April 1914 by Scoutmaster Miss Olivia Burges, and was affiliated to the Thornbury District.
The first meeting was held at the Ridge on May 9th, attended by  W. Trotman, H. Trotman, P.Marshall, H. Dixon, S. Stock, F. Phelps, and P. Stallard; the boys were instructed in map-reading by Col. Burges. The next week, they were joined by F. Thompson and F. Hillier, forming the Woodpigeon Patrol with P. Marshall as Patrol Leader. W. Trotman and P Marshall has been Scouts before, in the original Yate and Sodbury Troop under SM G. Holberrow.

1st saw the troop attending a District Rally at Tortworth. The Scouts' enthusiasm and Col. and Miss Burges instruction enabled them to take 1st prize in map-reading, and 2nd prizes in signalling and relay racing. Not bad for 3 meetings!

The summer continued with a camp at Brean Down, together with other troops.

The declaration of war in August brought new tasks for the Scouts. They acted as messengers to a regiment quartered in Sodbury.
